Beyond the Slide Deck: How IXI and Kaiden AI Build Communication Skills Through Realistic Practice

You can understand open-ended questions, ORBIT, Strategic Use of Evidence, Cognitive Interviewing, EAT MORE PIES, de-escalation, internal investigations, HEEAAR principles, Science-Based Interviewing, and SONAR on a slide.
The harder questions are:
Can you use them when the person across from you is exhibiting maladaptive behaviors—sarcasm, patronizing, disengagement, obsequiousness, or even attack?
How do you maximize the amount of information you get out of an interview?
How do you move someone from a crisis state to a rational one?
How do you interview in a way that preserves trust among employees and internal stakeholders?
How do you decide what evidence to present, and when?

Most communication training starts with information. Slides, models, examples, war stories, and discussion. Those foundations matter. But knowledge alone does not guarantee performance under pressure or confidence in the face of hostility.
The real test comes later. Someone has to choose a question, listen to the answer, manage their own reaction, notice the opportunity they almost missed, reflect, and adapt in real time. That happens in a conversation, not on a slide.
That is why IXI has partnered with Kaiden AI: to give people a place to practice before the conversation is real, important to careers, and in some cases life or death.
Practice before the real conversation
Here is the partnership, plainly.
IXI builds the scenarios. Kaiden provides the platform.
The order matters. We've made the case before that science-based interviewing has to come first and AI second—garbage interviewing creates garbage data, and AI just repeats it faster and flashier. The same logic applies to practice. A simulation based on a weak method only lets people rehearse that weak method more efficiently. The method comes first. The platform makes it repeatable.
The simulations our participants work through are designed by IXI around our own principles—science-based interviewing, evidence-based communication, ORBIT, Strategic Use of Evidence, and the crisis negotiation methods we teach in the classroom. Kaiden's voice-driven, real-time simulation technology is what lets a participant actually have that conversation, out loud, with an AI persona that responds to what they say.
Participants can move from "I understand the concept" to "I have practiced using it." They work through a realistic conversation, make decisions in the moment, see how their approach changes the interaction, get feedback, and take another attempt. Privately. With no career consequence for the attempt that didn't work.
The technology does not replace live instruction, coaching, role players, or judgment. It gives people more repetitions between and after those experiences.
Slides introduce communication skills. Practice develops them.
Slides still have a job. They introduce a framework, illustrate a concept, provide examples, and build shared language across a team. Nobody should throw them out.
But active learning asks something different of the learner. It asks them to retrieve, apply, explain, decide, and receive feedback.
A meta-analysis of 225 studies across science, engineering, and mathematics found that active learning outperformed lecture-only instruction. Examination scores rose by about 0.47 standard deviations—roughly six percent—and failure rates fell from 33.8 percent under traditional lecturing to 21.8 percent under active learning (Freeman et al., 2014).
Those are undergraduate classrooms, not interview rooms. The mechanism is what transfers: people learn a skill better when they have to use it.
Information is the beginning of learning. Practice is where a communication skill becomes available when pressure rises.
The takeaway is not "never use slides." It is "do not let the slide deck be the whole learning experience."
Learning becomes stronger when people have to use it
Repetition matters. Mindless repetition does not.
A useful practice cycle looks like this: attempt, feedback, reflection, adjustment, another attempt.
Retrieval practice — having people recall and apply information rather than reread it — has strong evidence behind it. A meta-analysis of 159 effects found that testing yourself on material beat restudying it, with a mean effect of g = 0.50. The same analysis found something directly relevant to how we run simulations: the benefit was substantially larger when learners received feedback (g = 0.73) than when they did not (g = 0.39) (Rowland, 2014).
Simulations create retrieval opportunities constantly. What question should I ask next? What am I missing? Do I reflect, pause, label, set a boundary, or change direction?
Consider the difference. Rereading a slide about open-ended questions is recognition. Opening a live conversation with an AI role player, listening to what comes back, and deciding what to say next is application. Only one of those resembles the job.
Immediate feedback closes the loop while the conversation is still fresh—a specific behavior to repeat or a specific one to change.
What the research says about simulation-based learning
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 609 studies enrolling more than 35,000 trainees in health professions education found that technology-enhanced simulation was associated with improvements in knowledge, skills, and behaviors when compared with no intervention (Cook et al., 2011)
When Cook et al. (2012), the same research group, compared technology-enhanced simulation against other instructional methods rather than against nothing, the effects were smaller—in the small-to-moderate range across knowledge and skills outcomes.
So simulation is a strong way to add practice where there wasn't any and an improvement over other well-designed instruction.
For communication skills, realism does not require cinematic graphics. It requires meaningful decisions, plausible responses, a chance to adapt, and a guided debrief.
The value is not that a computer can replace human interaction. The value is that a learner can practice human interaction more often, more consistently, and with far less logistical friction than live role-play alone allows.
From HR conflict communication to crisis negotiation: the principle is the same
High-stakes communication skills research points the same direction.
Lavoie et al. (2023) conducted a study comparing virtual reality with live-action scenario training for police responding to mental health crises and found that both formats significantly improved de-escalation competency compared with a control group—and that the two formats were comparable in skill acquisition. The VR format was also no more cognitively demanding than live action.
That is the practical finding: well-designed virtual scenarios can supplement live scenario work rather than compete with it. Live role players remain valuable. There are simply never enough of them, and they can be expensive to schedule and are logistically demanding.
The stakes and context differ across our work, but the learning principle does not. A supervisor preparing for a difficult employee conversation and a crisis negotiator preparing for a tense call both benefit from structured practice, reflection, feedback, and another chance to improve. So does an HR investigator trying to take a clean, uncontaminated account.
Promising evidence, honest limits
We are not going to oversell this. Being straight about evidence is the brand.
A 2026 study looked specifically at Kaiden AI use in a law enforcement academy. Researchers analyzed 813 usable simulation transcripts from 52 recruits at a large Northern Virginia criminal justice academy, collected between October 2024 and April 2025, coding twelve communication categories (Oakley, 2026).
With repeated simulation use, participants showed statistically significant increases in three things: de-escalation language, empathy language, and open-ended questions.
Here is what the study did not find, and this part matters just as much. It found no significant reduction in filler words, police jargon, aggressive language, or escalation language.
Here is what it did not measure at all: delayed retention, field performance, information yield, accuracy, real-world case outcomes, or participant confidence.
And here is the design: no control group, no random assignment, a single site, and a data set that excluded users with fewer than five total system usages. Effect sizes in the conventional sense were not reported.
That is promising preliminary evidence for observable communication behaviors. It is not proof of causation, and it is not proof of transfer to the field.
Which is precisely why IXI treats Kaiden as one component of a full learning system: evidence-informed instruction, realistic practice, instructor feedback, structured debriefing, repetition, and follow-up post-class learning with microlearning. It would be premature for anyone to claim that a platform alone produces lasting field performance. Effective training should be honest about what is known, what is promising, and what still needs testing. That standard is the same one we apply to interviewing methods themselves.
Build confidence through tested capability, not false certainty
Confidence is valuable when it is earned through realistic, repeated attempts and honest feedback. Confidence without practice becomes overconfidence—and in investigations, HR, leadership, and crisis communication, overconfidence is expensive.
There is a wrinkle worth knowing about. Active learning often feels worse than listening to a polished lecture. In a controlled study at Harvard, students were randomly assigned to active learning or to lectures covering identical content. Students in the active classes rated their learning lower—yet scored higher on tests of what they actually learned. The feeling of learning and actual learning ran in opposite directions (Deslauriers et al., 2019).
Expect that in the room. A participant who struggles through a hard simulation and feels clumsy afterward may learn more than one who simply nodded along to a presentation.
Simulation lets people experience that productive difficulty somewhere safe.
The goal is not to make someone feel certain. It is to help them become more capable, more adaptable, and more prepared.
The target is calibrated confidence: knowing what you can do, knowing what you still need to work on, and having a plan for when the conversation turns.

See the skill. An example, demonstration, video, transcript, or instructor-led breakdown of what good use actually looks like.
Practice the skill. Participants run a real-time scenario built by IXI around the interaction they actually face at work.
Receive feedback. Review what was said, what worked, what narrowed the conversation, and what to try differently.
Try again. Another attempt with a changed condition—new information, more resistance, less cooperation.
Debrief and transfer. Connect the practice to real policy, real risk, and the next real conversation on their calendar.

A competitive advantage is a team that can actually use its training
Organizations invest heavily in training and then give people almost no chance to practice the actual behavior. The gap between the class and the conversation is where the investment quietly disappears.
Real-time simulations close some of that gap. They are scalable, repeatable, and private.
The advantage is not having AI. Anyone can buy AI. The advantage is a disciplined, evidence-informed process for helping people communicate better when it matters—science-based interviewing, difficult conversations, HR and workplace investigations, leadership under conflict, customer service, compliance, corporate security, and crisis negotiation.
The competitive advantage is not a slide deck, an avatar, or a buzzword. It is a workforce that has practiced the conversations that matter: how to listen when emotion is high, how to ask without narrowing the answer, how to build cooperation, how to de-escalate conflict, and how to make better decisions with incomplete information.
