When interview content is filtered through pre-interview assumptions rather than tested hypotheses, investigators may unintentionally overestimate its significance or reliability. This is not a failure of interviewing skill—it is a failure to separate interview planning, information gathering, and interpretation.
Science-Based Interviewing and Bias Prevention
Science-Based Interviewing (SBI) addresses bias not only during the interview itself, but before the interview ever begins. SBI emphasizes deliberate interview planning grounded in evidence, clearly defined objectives, and an awareness of how assumptions can shape questioning, listening, and interpretation. Effective planning helps investigators identify what information is actually needed, what is known versus assumed, and where uncertainty still exists.
By separating interview goals from case theories, SBI reduces the risk that questions will be shaped by confirmation-seeking rather than information gathering. Open-ended questioning, active listening, and careful documentation are most effective when paired with planning that anticipates alternative explanations and resists premature conclusions. In this way, SBI protects the integrity of information at both the planning and collection stages.

However, while SBI strengthens how information is gathered and preserved, it does not resolve how that information is later interpreted or how investigative decisions evolve once evidence accumulates. Planning helps reduce contamination at the front end, but decision-making still requires structured methods to test assumptions and evaluate conclusions as a case progresses.

Red Teaming as a Decision-Making Safeguard
While Science-Based Interviewing protects the quality of information, red teaming protects the quality of decisions made from that information. Red teaming is a structured approach designed to deliberately challenge assumptions, test hypotheses, and evaluate whether conclusions are adequately supported by the evidence.

Red teaming shifts the investigative mindset from confirmation to examination. Instead of asking whether evidence supports the current theory, red teaming asks what evidence would contradict it, what assumptions must be true for it to hold, and what alternative explanations remain viable.
What Red Teaming Does Differently
Red teaming differs from informal devil’s advocacy in that it relies on structure rather than investigator personality. It assigns purpose to challenge and embeds skepticism into the investigative process. This reduces reliance on individual willingness to dissent and helps prevent hierarchy, experience, or case ownership from suppressing alternative investigative viewpoints.
Rather than opposing investigators, red teaming strengthens investigations by improving the reliability and defensibility of decisions.
