Why IXI for Communication Under Pressure

When the pressure is real, communication cannot be left to instinct

Most people communicate well when the conversation is easy. The challenge comes when someone is angry, defensive, frustrated, afraid, resistant, or certain they are not being heard.

That is when people can become reactive and exhibit maladaptive behaviors that will hurt effective communication. They rush to correct, persuade, defend, or end the conversation. Important information is missed. Assumptions take over. A manageable problem becomes a larger conflict.

IXI teaches practical communication skills for those moments. We help leaders, teams, HR professionals, customer-facing staff, security and compliance professionals, and healthcare teams communicate with clarity and confidence when the stakes are high.

Experience forged where clear communication mattered most

Captain Christian Cory (ret.) brings more than 25 years of experience in high-stakes communication, including homicide and sex-crimes investigations, crisis negotiation, leadership, and the command of major investigations. He is an Executive Fellow with the National Policing Institute, a National Institute of Justice LEADS Scholar, a Certified Red Team Practitioner, Co-Director of Project Aletheia, and a Visiting Scholar at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. His work was forged in interrogation rooms and hostage negotiations, where major decisions could carry life-and-death consequences and clear thinking was not optional. Today, he continues to consult with agencies on major cases and complex investigations, bringing that practical field experience to communication training.

Dr. Maria Hartwig is a Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Co-Founder and Co-Director of Project Aletheia. She is a leading researcher in the psychology of deception, deception detection, interviewing, and interrogation. Her research has been supported by and conducted in collaboration with the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG), law enforcement, and the Department of Defense. Through her work, she helps bring evidence-based interviewing training to investigators from federal agencies to state and local levels.

The same human principles apply in private-sector settings. A frustrated customer, employee concern, tense leadership meeting, workplace conflict, security issue, or high-risk decision may not look like a hostage negotiation, but the communication challenges are often familiar: emotion, uncertainty, resistance, incomplete information, and the need to make a sound decision.

Captain Cory and Dr. Hartwig also advise chiefs, sheriffs, commanders, corporate investigators, and training directors evaluate and strengthen their interview, interrogation, and deception detection training. Too often, these practices are shaped by misinformation, pseudoscience, and poor information-gathering habits rather than evidence. IXI and Project Aletheia help agencies identify those gaps, replace them with research-informed methods, and build training that improves the quality, reliability, and usefulness of the information investigators obtain.

We teach communication skills people can use

IXI does not offer vague advice to “be a better communicator.” Training is built around practical, repeatable skills that are grounded in research when a conversation is difficult.

Participants learn how to:

  • Use active listening to understand concerns, emotion, and what may be happening beneath the first response

  • Build rapport and cooperation without becoming passive, overly familiar, or manipulative

  • Ask clear questions that uncover useful information

  • Quit using the body language pseudoscience that ends up not being useful at all.

  • Reduce defensiveness and manage emotion without avoiding accountability

  • Use effective pauses, reflections, paraphrasing, and summaries to reduce confusion

  • Set respectful boundaries and communicate next steps clearly

  • Recognize assumptions and make more bias-resistant decisions

  • Handle disagreement without turning it into personal conflict

  • Dump less effective legacy interviewing methods

Communication and critical thinking belong together

The quality of a decision depends on the quality of the information people are willing and able to share.

That is why IXI pairs communication training with practical red teaming. Teams learn to challenge tunnel vision, beat confirmation bias, test assumptions, consider alternative explanations, identify overlooked risks, and invite the perspectives that may be missing from the room.

The goal is not disagreement or agrument for its own sake. It is better information, stronger critical thinking, and decisions that have been tested before time, money, trust, or safety is committed to.

Practice builds skill. Practice builds confidence.

People do not develop confidence in difficult conversations by watching slides alone. They build it through realistic practice.

IXI workshops can include discussion, scenarios, skill drills, team exercises, and real-time AI communication simulations. Participants can practice responding to a defensive employee, frustrated customer, difficult coworker, or resistant stakeholder. They receive immediate feedback, adjust their approach, and try again in a private, low-risk setting.

This follows the same practice principles used by hostage negotiators and high-stakes interviewers: realistic conversations, repeated attempts, immediate feedback, and the opportunity to improve in the moment.

Bring communication under pressure to your organization

Good communication is not about winning an argument, boosting your ego, or finding the perfect script. It is about understanding people, gathering reliable information, reducing unnecessary escalation, and moving a difficult situation toward a workable next step.

IXI can help your people build the communication skills and confidence to do that when the pressure is real.
